The NTT R&D Forum 2019: Building a better future

The NTT DATA R&D Forum 2019: Building a better futureThe world is changing rapidly, and if enterprises don’t evolve at the same rate, there’s a danger of being left trailing in the wake of digital transformation.

That’s why at NTT DATA, global innovation is the heart of everything we do. Our research and development ecosystems are world-leading, and every year we showcase the results of their efforts at our annual R&D Forum.

This year’s event will take place between the 12th and 15th November at the Musashino R&D Centre in Tokyo. Executives from across NTT DATA will be heading to Japan to absorb all the latest innovations and insights.

So, what exciting developments are in store at the 2019 summit?

IOWN – Creating a smarter world

This year, we’re presenting our vision around the theme of Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN). IOWN is comprised of a function-specific dedicated network, cognitive foundation, and digital twin computing.

Simply put, by shifting from the world of electronics to the world of photonics, we can create a high-performance network with excellent capacity, low latency, flexibility, and energy efficiency. IOWN presents a way to quickly and effectively transition our world into a ‘smart world.’

And for us, this is not an imaginary ideal. Smart cities, smart mobility, smart manufacturing, smart entertainment and smart healthcare will inevitably arrive. In fact, in many cases they’re already here.

A great example of this is Tokyo – it’s well on the way to becoming a smart city, encouraged by the infrastructure preparations ahead of the 2020 Olympics. This prestigious event has served as the catalyst for the city to develop and transition to smart systems, from intelligent security to autonomous transport.

These innovations are a vital step in solving the many social challenges confronting society today. However, contemporary social issues such as food waste and environmental destruction span a wide range of fields, and cannot be solved simply by one city or company.

To create a better society, and to do so quickly, we need new ways of thinking that enable collaboration across corporate and industry boundaries.

Additionally, it’s essential that people of all ages, genders, occupations and ethnicities benefit from technology. It must unite humanity, not divide it – positively contributing to all of us and our natural world.

Sample world-leading R&D projects

During the forum, attendees have the chance to immerse themselves in 7 R&D areas:

  • IOWN for a ‘smart world’ (this year’s special category)
  • Networks
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data collection, management, and analysis
  • Media devices and robotics
  • Security
  • Basic Research

Each area will highlight exceptional, world-class R&D projects that will genuinely shape the future of how we live and work. Business and technology leaders from every industry across the globe can network with international peers and explore innovation in action.

The Forum also brings together a range of talks designed to allow participants to engage with the leaders of NTT’s innovation ambitions and investments.

Jun Sawada, NTT President and CEO, and Katsuhiko Kawazoe, NTT SVP, Head of R&D Planning will be delivering keynote talks – with many others across our business speaking during the event.

If you’re unable to join us, don’t worry – there’s no reason to miss out. Follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter, where we’ll be giving you the highlights daily throughout the Forum. NTT DATA believe in ‘guiding greatness’, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve learned!
