NTT DATA has always been at the forefront of technological innovation and applying AI within the water cycle is no exception. As leading experts in the application of AI to monitoring, managing and delivering across the water cycle, we have AI-powered solutions that provide value at every stage.

For example, at the environment stage we create digital twins to support with environmental planning, as well as advanced hydrological models. Across treatment and supply we deliver AI-powered leak prediction models to improve efficiency and powerful demand forecasting. Our automated optimisation of water resources extends from drinking water treatment through to wastewater treatment. This AI-underpinning not only drives efficiency but provides a previously unimaginable depth and quality of insight at every stage.

Smart network connectivity

Smart metering is just the starting point for creating a truly smart water network. We work with clients to introduce and manage monitoring at every stage of the water cycle. To do this, we create clear data structures that define what data you need to gather and how it needs to be stored. Once the architecture is finalised, we deploy sensors across the network that supply the data you need, whether on water consumption, leaks pressures, backflows or any other critical indicator. All data streams are integrated alongside a structured governance framework.

This smart network connects to the IoT monitoring devices, and the data these provide allows you to improve water management by detecting problems in pipelines and accurately and automatically monitoring water use. It also allows you to automate your billing systems and expand your business by offering new services.

Real-time software for water quality

Our IoT-software platform provides monitoring and early warning of contamination or variations in water quality by analysing the physical-chemical footprint of a set of parameters in real time. Our clients use this capability across a broad spectrum of applications including monitoring the drinking water network, water in natural ecosystems and treated wastewater. Up to the minute insight enables you to take immediate action to minimise the impact of incidents and reduce the risk of them occurring again in the future.

Government of Spain: Risk segmentation and prediction

Government of Spain turned to NTT DATA when they needed a way to organise and monitor 350 dams across their estate, profiling them to establish common characteristics such as physical, hydrological, geometric, typological and seismic features. They also needed to be able to compare and assess the risks facing each group.

By collecting and debugging the dam risk data, segmenting it, profiling the families and drawing individual and collective risk conclusions, we gave the Government of Spain the ability not just to segment the dams according to risk of failure but the ability to predict the risk of unassessed dams- a vital planning tool for the future.  

Acqualia: Cyber security systems for water treatment plants for 

When Aqualia sought to strengthen the security of its water treatment plants, with the aim of segregating OT/IT environments, NTT DATA was the partner they turned to. Drawing on our extensive cybersecurity experience and our holistic approach to services and platforms, we deployed Fortinet technology to deliver a robust solution.

We were able to ensure the protection of OT and IT environments and to provide secure remote access and centralised plant management. We provide continuous review, improvement incident management and direct support to the OT security teams. All of this means Aqualia has an enhanced ability to detect and respond to cyber threats.

Aguas andinas: AI-based optimisation and digital twin for a wastewater treatment plant  

Aguas andinas, the largest environmental services company in Chile, manages the urban water cycle: collection, production and distribution of drinking water, and the treatment and management of wastewater, serving more than 2 million households. They needed to construct a digital twin for one of their wastewater treatment plants to optimise its processes. It was a complex ask and that’s why NTT DATA was their partner of choice.

We developed a digital twin for the plant with operational data and implemented an AI-based model that allowed for the simulation of interventions. This led to plant process optimisation that delivered 18% energy savings (with peaks of up to 32%), financial savings of €5,000 per month and increased automatic aeration control.
