NTT DATA Delivers A Unique Digital Experience at the 148th Open at Royal Portrush

Congratulations to Irish golfer, Shane Lowry, on taking home the Claret Jug the first time after winning the 148th Open Championship in Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland.

Once again, the NTT DATA Wall was part of the action, capturing data and visualizing it to enhance the viewing experience for spectators. Since 2013, NTT DATA has been an official patron of The Open, the world’s most prestigious major tournament in professional golf. With 237,000 spectators lining the fairways and a half-billion more following on TV. Located in the Spectator Village, the NTT DATA Wall is a centerpiece of spectator engagement — both on and off the course — featuring an interactive display with continuously updated graphical information on scores, rankings, plays at each hole, details on each player, and related topics posted on social media. By identifying, interpreting and visualizing raw data, we bring fans closer to the action, revealing hidden trends and powerful insights on the tournament and the players.

This year, NTT DATA demonstrated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to tag TV broadcasts extensively and automatically, and offer NTT DATA’s guests use of tablet devices onsite for highly personalized enjoyment of the action in incredible detail during the championship, enabling viewers to quickly find scenes arranged into various categories (by players, holes, highlights, etc.) so they can select and replay a diverse range of scenes as desired.

We continue to look ahead at what innovation NTT DATA can bring to The Open in 2020 as we work to continually enhance the spectator experience on and off the course.
