Every year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is an opportunity to reflect on progress, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and recommit to creating an inclusive workplace where women can thrive. This year, we hosted a series of events that brought together colleagues, partners, and industry voices to explore how we can continue to drive meaningful change.
This year’s theme centered on embracing challenges, pushing beyond comfort zones, and recognising the power of resilience in achieving gender equity. Throughout the day, we heard from a variety of individuals who are driving real progress but also acknowledged that the journey towards true inclusion is far from over. It was a moment to reflect, to be inspired, and to commit to taking action, not just on IWD, but every day.
One of the most powerful sessions of the day came from our external guest speaker Beth French, an ocean swimmer and world record breaker, who shared her extraordinary story of resilience, overcoming fear, and stepping into the unknown. Her journey challenged us to think differently about how we approach obstacles in our professional lives and beyond.
Stepping Into the Unknown
Beth spoke about her decision to take on extreme swimming challenges, not for records or recognition, but to push herself beyond what she thought was possible. She described how she confronted fear head-on, adapting to the unpredictable and finding strength in the face of adversity. Her story was a reminder that true progress - whether personal or professional - often comes from stepping into discomfort rather than away from it.
As I listened, I found myself reflecting on my own approach to challenges. I have always believed that growth comes from taking risks, even when it means disappointing others along the way. A phrase I often use is: Disappoint others before you disappoint yourself.
For too long, many of us - especially women - have been conditioned to prioritise the expectations of others, often at the expense of our own ambitions, well-being, or instincts. But the truth is, if we constantly seek to meet external expectations, we risk losing sight of our own potential. Sometimes, stepping forward means making choices that not everyone will understand. But if those choices align with our values and long-term goals, they are the right ones.
Breaking Barriers at Work
Fearlessness and resilience shape how we tackle challenges and push beyond limits, whether in extreme pursuits or the workplace. In the technology sector, where women remain underrepresented, it takes confidence and perseverance to challenge norms, advocate for change, and take leadership roles.
At NTT DATA, we are committed to supporting women at every stage of their careers. This year, our UK&I CEO, Niccolo Spataro, reinforced our ambition to increase female representation across the business and in senior leadership roles. This is a clear indication of our intent to drive structural change. Acknowledging gender disparities is only the first step. Real progress comes from actively breaking down the barriers that prevent women from advancing.
Taking Action Beyond IWD
While our celebrations surrounding International Women’s Day may have passed, our work continues. We are committed to building an inclusive and equitable workplace where women can lead, innovate, and succeed. This means investing in mentorship, developing leadership pipelines, and fostering a culture where everyone feels empowered to take bold steps forward.
As we move forward, I encourage all of us to think about the ways in which we can challenge ourselves. What risks are you willing to take? Where can you push beyond what feels comfortable?
And most importantly, how can you support others in doing the same?
